Six Steps for Reaching Goals

It feels great!

  1. Do what you love. ‘For stunning success one must do what s/he loves to do and money follows’ – writes a recent article in Harvard Business Review. The most important teaching Steve Jobs had to offer to the world was ‘Do what you love. It is your life; do not spend it living on someone else’s dreams. We have nothing to lose as we are already naked.’ Don’t be afraid to follow your heart. Have your own dreams and follow them. Be courageous. Make a plan and take the plunge.
  2. Choose the niche. Decide what you want to sell and whom do you want to sell it. Perhaps the first two ‘P’ – Product & Place are the most important out of the four Ps (Product, Place, Promotion & Price), marketing champion Philip Kotler pointed out.
  3. Believe only in the best. Quality is important. In fact, if you are really looking forward to being a lifetime achiever and are interested in building a world class brand then compromise not. If you do not have enough margins then increase the price and if you are delivering something to middle class people and competitive pricing is one of the differentiating factors for you then at least make sure that you offer best value for the money the customer / employer can buy. ‘Be a yardstick of quality. Some people are not used to an environment where excellence is expected.’
  4. Focus like a laser beam. Imagine what could have happened if Sachin Tendulakar has tried his hands in Football and Bollywood along with cricket? Or if Barack Obama had tried his hands in IT & singing in parallel to politics?  Choose one profession / passion – whatever it may be and try to become the best. Famous personal development & leadership coach Robin Sharma calls it -- BIW (Best In the World).  That is only possible if you love what you do and do what you love. Otherwise you will take time out of your work and enjoy some hobbies and then eat time from this for your work. It can be a complete mix up.
  5. Be a knowledge machine. Star achievers are students of learning. They believe in on-going education and practice. Think of top performer in any area and they have multiple coaches, they go to seminars/conferences, they attend training programs, they read books and listen recorded programs. Think of reducing your time on entertainment and increasing the same in education.
  6. Harness people power. Surround yourself with people who ideate and execute more; those must be learned people. Company of people makes lasting impacts on our head & heart. What more, it makes your character which in turn defines your destiny. Great people are quite helping. They will walk extra miles for you and be happy to see you reaching on the new peaks of success.

It is a not only suicide. It's a murder!

SECONDHAND SMOKE is combination of the smoke given off by a burning tobacco product and the smoke exhaled by a smoker. SECONDHAND SMOKE is also known as passive smoke or involuntary smoke. Inhaling this is called passive smoking or secondhand smoking. People can be exposed to SECONDHAND SMOKE in home, car, the workplace and public places.

More than 7000 chemicals have been identified in SECONDHAND SMOKE, 250 of that are very harmful for human health and 69 of which cause cancer.

A doctor at told, 'a lady is going to die in 3 months because of cancer. Guess, what was the cause? SECONDHAND SMOKE. She told that the patient’s father was a lawyer and wanted her daughter to become a lawyer too. She did become a good lawyer. Both of them spent lot of time together in car, in court and at home, of course. ‘We think, that father’s tobacco smoke is responsible for her death,’ the doctor said. How sad it is?!
It is guessed that the cause of Steve Jobs’s death was also SECONDHAND SMOKE. In Steve’s childhood, both his parents used to smoke at home and in car. Both died because of cancer and then the same smoke killed the legend at Apple.

It causes multiple diseases and premature death in nonsmoking people. Exposure to SECONDHAND SMOKE has immediate harmful effects on a person’s heart and blood vessels. It may increase the risk of heart disease by 30 percent and causes other serious cardio vascular and respiratory diseases.
Children exposed to SECONDHAND SMOKE are at increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome, ear infections, colds, pneumonia, bronchitis, leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors and severe asthma problems. It is a known cause of lung cancer, heart disease, low birth weight, chronic lung ailments, as well as other eye & ear related health problems. It slows the growth of children’s lungs and brain. Babies of expectant mothers and newborn children are more vulnerable to the poisons in SECONDHAND SMOKE. It is estimated that more than 22 million children are at risk of reading defects because of SECONDHAND SMOKE. Higher levels of SECONDHAND SMOKE exposure also contribute to reasoning disorders among children. Living with a smoker and getting exposed to SECONDHAND SMOKE increases nonsmoker’s chances of developing tobacco related diseases by 27 percent.

Apart from massive health hazards it has also been found that children who are exposed to SECONDHAND SMOKE at home are two times more likely to start smoking than those not exposed and have positive thoughts about killer habits.

About 40 percent of all children are regularly exposed to SECONDHAND SMOKE at home. In India, annually six lacs premature deaths occur because of SECONDHAND SMOKE.  31 percent of these deaths attributable to secondhand smoking occur in children.    The primary source of passive smoking exposure for children is their own home, but children are also exposed to SECONDHAND SMOKE in school and other public places.

In order to warn people about deadly effects of SECONDHAND SMOKE on children a campaign ‘Tobacco is eating your baby alive’ has been launched by the Ministry of Health & Welfare. The campaign graphically and pictorially depicts how exposure to tobacco smoke can kill their kids?

WHO reports that there is no safe level of exposure to SECONDHAND SMOKE hence reducing would not be enough. We will have to completely stop it. But friends, no amount of campaigning would help stop SECONDHAND SMOKE if we are not determined to protect ourselves and our kids.  Let us maintain safe distance from smoking, smokers and the places of smoke. Especially, save kids and ladies from this poison and avoid committing a heinous crime and sin.

What a mother can do?

“Benjamin, is this your report card?” my mother asked me as she picked up the folded white card from the table.
“Umm, yeah,” I said trying to sound casual. Too ashamed to hand it to her, I had dropped it on the table, hoping that she would not notice until after I went to bed. I was in fifth grade. Most of my classmates considered me the dumbest kid in the class and the rest of them the dumbest kid in the world. They frequently made jokes about me. Before long, I too began to feel as though I was the most stupid kid in fifth grade. Despite mother’s frequently saying, “You are smart, Bennie. You can do anything and everything you want to do,” I did not believe her.
While slowly she read my report card, reading everything one word at a time, I hurried into my room and started getting ready for my bed. A few minutes later mother came into my bedroom.
“Benjamin,” she said, “are these your grades?” She held the card in front of me as if I had not seen it before. “Oh yeah, but you know it does not mean much.”
“No, that’s not true Benjamin. It means a lot.”
“It’s just a report card.”
“But it is more than that.”
“Benjamin, Education is the only way you are ever going to escape poverty,” she said. “It is the only way you are ever going to get ahead in life and be successful. Do you understand that?”
“Yes, Mother,” I mumbled.
“But I just can’t do better,” I said.
“No, you are just not living upto your potential. You need to work more. From now on you will not watch Television except for two pre selected programs and that too after doing your daily home work.”
“Furthermore you will go to library every weekend and read one extra book,” mother said.

Once the dumbest kid of the world is now known as Dr Benjamin Carson. He is famous as the world’s most successful pediatric neurosurgeon and the world calls him genius. The nation calls him a messiah and former the president of United States of America, Jorge W Bush, awarded him the highest civilian award of the nation – ‘President’s National Award of Freedom’. Dr Benjamin Carson is Director of John Hopkins Medical University; he is a celebrated author, educator, great motivational speaker and a social activist.

Benjamin’s mother changed his destiny by making him quit TV and embrace reading.  Being black and son of a single mother parent who did the chore work in houses of the rich taken away all the opportunities. But his mother made it possible for him to be successful by giving gift of faith, helping make habit of reading books and break habit of watching TV. There are more than a thousand book clubs and many other schools on his name today.
Though he has already moved from ‘I have a dream to I am the dream.’ As millions of students and their parents look up to Benjamin Carson to be like him or make their kids like him. But still Benjamin Carson cherishes a dream of setting nation’s largest scholarship scheme for students across the United States of America on his mother Mrs Sonya Carson’s name.

I have read two books by Dr Carson; am really influenced and improved by his ideas and stories. One - ‘Gifted Hands – which is his biography. It has also been converted into a fantastic movie with same name ‘Gifted Hands’. The other book is - ‘THINK BIG’. His life is all about gratefulness for mother, teacher and books. Especially for mother, Dr Benjamin Carson says, ‘A mother is not a person to lean on, but a person to make leaning unnecessary.’

I truly believe, motherhood has the greatest influence in human life. On personal front let me borrow a quote from Abraham Lincoln to express my gratitude for my mother. 'All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.'

Today, on the mother’s day, ‘I salute all the mothers of yesterday, today and tomorrow.’ Let us pledge to make her happy and keep on doing this for her entire life and beyond. For me, it is quite simple as she is particular only about two things. One, how caring husband am I to my wife? Two, how good instrument of service am I to others?

Let Love Live Long Life

In the month of February, it was nearly a dawn. I could still see some sparkling stars in the sky. I could feel fresh breeze and smell fragrance of flowers. I could hear singing sounds of sparrows. I was on my morning walk in the best park of this millennium city – Choudhary Devi Lal Park. While walking I was undergoing my gratitude routine for lord. I just said ‘God, thanks for giving me a loving & caring heart’. Now please give me more wisdom & courage to spread love in your world.  I was still single and my eyes naturally used to spot couples wherever I went. I noticed a handsome boy and a gorgeous girl with sad faces. Probably they were chatting all the night and could not sleep well, I thought. We were walking in opposite directions. As I crossed them, I said, ‘Good morning’ with a smile on my face. The lady reciprocated the same but the boy asked angrily, what is so good in this morning? I went blank and then said, ‘the quotation on your t-shirt is good’. The boy smiled and said, ‘but hum ladke maante kahan hain’ (but we boys do not learn). Perhaps they had a fight with each other. The quotation on the t-shirt read, ‘Love is a sweet suicide’.
We all read similar messages on trucks, autos and t-shirts. But my perspective on love was, is and will remain entirely different because it is one of my top three values.
For me, love is the purpose of life. For me love is the reason of existence. For me love is the way to live.
Sacred soul of Swami Vivekananda spoke a spontaneous & sincere sermon in response to a question on love. Swami said, ‘Love is a triangle. The first angle of love is- it does not ask for anything in return. It only gives and expects nothing. It’s a give & give relationship. Second angle is lack of fear. Perhaps that is why the song is, ‘Pyar karne waale kabhi darrte nahi, haan darrte nahi, jo darrte hain wo pyar karte nahi’ (people who love do not fear and who fear do not love). I am sure everyone must have heart about Heer Ranzha, Laila Maznoo, Romeo Juliet and many other who sacrificed their lives for love. You may hang me on cross and cut me to pieces and I still love you. Jesus Christ loved his people. The third angle is – love is not a means to anything, it is its own end.’ I love you because you are beautiful and earn handsome income – here physical beauty and income are the ends. Love is just a means to reach those ends. And hence, it is not a true love.
If I speak in the language of angels and have no love in heart, I am only making noise. If I possess all the knowledge and preach all truths – if I have the faith that moves mountains, but have no real love for my fellow men- I am nothing. Even if I give away everything I own, even if I sacrifice my life and become a martyr, if I am not sincere and do these things in pride and not in love – they are meaningless and profit nothing.  Love, kindness, charity and doing good to others are my priorities in life. Love never fails. Other things fade and pass away, but love endures. I must not slip into selfish & unkind ways. I must learn, live and lecture faith & hope; charity & kindness, patience & humility – and most of all love for all fellow beings.
I love myself most. Sound sleep; Fresh fruits; Walk on woods; Sincere smiles; Loud laughter; and other healthy, happy habits are my tools to express this love for myself.  I love my father, the Almighty lord. Of course, I love my family & the world.
Mother Teresa said it the best, when walked on the stage to receive Nobel Prize for spreading love in the world. She was given the mike and asked to deliver a speech ‘what can we contribute for world peace’? She held the mike in her hands, came on the center of the stage, smiled and said, ‘Go home & love your family.’  I can see shyness and sparkle in your eyes. I can see silent, still, speaking lips. I can see sweet smiles on your faces. You are free to pour your heart. You are free to express your feelings; I would say the same words, ‘Go home & love your family.’ Let Love Live Long Life.

Gold is not good for Indian Economy

Gold not Good
You must have heard & read messages like: Save earth. Save nature. Save water. Save trees. Save electricity. Save tigers. Save girls.  Did you ever hear something like- ‘Save economy’. Yes, that is what I am going to ask for today.
I was analyzing impact of this year’s Union Budget on common man. Increase of import duty on gold from 1.5% to 3% caught my attention. They just made it double, 1.5% to 3%, which after taking the bullwhip effect into count will mean that per 10 grams of gold, we pay approximately Rs 1500 extra.  I wondered why the government would raise prices of gold to that hefty level in a country which was known as ‘sone ki chidiya’. Being an argumentative Indian, I could not stamp the step as a good or bad. I went deeper and understood the reasoning. Let me explain the logic behind.
Indians are crazy on gold jewellery and hence they do not buy gold in kilograms and quintals. They buy gold in tonnes. Besides in-country production, India’s annual import of this yellow sparkling metal is 1000 tonnes. India accounts for one third of total world demand of gold. India’s GDP is no where closer to that of China & USA still the demand for gold in India is 140% of China and 480% of USA. This demand converts into an outflow of 60 billion USD which is second largest after our spending on crude oil.
What do we get in return? - A Non-Performing Asset. Bartering of 60 billion USD for non performing asset is not a wise decision for our economy. I personally, am not even ready to call it an asset. My mother does not want to keep it as she is afraid of thieves after a robbery in my neighborhood. My wife does not want to take the extra stress of keeping it with her, as through newspapers, she stays updated on mishappenings in Gurgaon. I don’t even want to touch it after I lost a costly diamond ring. Girls and ladies wear artificial jewellery in parties and marriages now a day. So it becomes a hard core liability and we need to pay recurring charges to bank for keeping these in locker. Every gram of imported gold also means that the country’s savings flow out to other countries and create jobs there.
India has around 30 gold mines. But quality of country's gold bearing ore is extremely poor and as a result, it becomes uncompetitive to produce this precious metal. Each tonne of Indian gold bearing ore yields only 22 gms of gold. Experts speak that the exercise is uncompetitive if the output is less than 47 gms of gold per tonne. So government might declare a full stop on production of gold in India. This further will increase the import quantity, rates and taxes on gold which in turn will lead to even bigger outflow of money.  These all will weaken the Indian currency and hence a blow to the economy. The government is thinking to undertake extensive education campaigns because if not controlled the import of gold would touch 100 billion USD in 2015.

Therefore, just like - Save earth. Save nature. Save water. Save trees. Save electricity. Save tigers. Save girls. There will be no wonder if government comes with a bill that all the jewelers need to write a message in their show rooms ‘Please minimize your gold shopping and save economy’.
You can become responsible citizens and avoid hurting our economy by not buying or at least minimizing the purchase of gold.
